One day, Stieglitz gave me a print of The Steerage, which was one of his favorite photographs, and I spent an entire afternoon watching him retouch the print with brush. As he painted away on the ship's mast, increasing the shadows with a watercolor set he'd asked me to purchase, he remarked, "I always thought this mast should be rounder".
