Historically, violence has been supported by the church and by other legal institutions. Physical punishment of children was extolled by the Bible, and this legal prerogative assured parents, teachers, and guardians. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was established before the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
